Our Mission

The Tidewater Team is dedicated to encourage best practices in the teaching of mathematics to promote math excellence.

Our History

The Tidewater Team was originally established in Fall 2007 through The College of William and Mary and a Mathematics Science Partnership Grant funded by the Virginia Department of Education. Dr. Marguerite Mason, Professor of Mathematics Education, develops and implements the grant proposals submitted to the Virginia Department of Education. Each year the team has a unique focus driven by the needs established by The Virginia Department of Education and our surrounding school districts.

Our Projects

2007-2008: Focus on conducting and developing Lesson Study Research Groups, emphasis on K-8, Participants spread throughout the Tidewater region

2008-2009: Focus on providing support to improve mathematical instruction and content knowledge to participating sixth and seventh grade teachers throughout the Tidewater region

2009-2010: Focus on providing support for successful implementation of the new high school course: Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis, ongoing summer graduate courses contributing to the K-8 Mathematics Specialist degree, Algebra Add-On Endorsements, and continuing pedagogical and content knowledge development for the best practices of teaching mathematics.

The effectiveness of the Tidewater Team is a result of the strong partnerships between The College of William and Mary and the surrounding Tidewater area school divisions.
